Lake
Merced is
a jewel in the southwest corner of San
Francisco, an important water, recreational,
and natural resource for the surrounding
communities. In centuries past the Ohlone
Tribe lived on its shores.

Lake
Merced, however
a popular place to visit, began
to deteriorate - aging recreational
facilities, degraded habitat, and lowered
lake level caused public alarm.

In
more recent years the Lake has served
for folks to come together for picnics,
crewing regattas, trout derbies, 5K runs,
mornings of bird watching and many other
events. Students from nearby schools and
colleges have completed course requirements
with studies of the wildlife habitat,
water quality, and history of the lake.
And everyday, large numbers of areas residents
walk, run, bike, and rollerblade around
its edge.

The
Lake Merced Task Force was
founded to address the deterioration
and the Lake's sustainability as one
of San Francisco's most valuable natural
and recreational areas.
