Hello, my name is Robert Anderson and I am a student at city college and live in the Villa's. I am also an intern for the National Park Service on Alcatraz. Often I go to Lake Merced to observe birds and other wildlife. On september 19, 2005 at 3:30 P.M. I spotted a Red Fox resting under a pine tree. He showed no fear of me and in fact walked up and sniffed my pack which was only a few feet from me. Then he explored some bushes before finally disappearing into thick brush.

These foxes have a territorial range that only extends a mile or two.  Because of the "island" like habitat your website describes, I believe he resides in a large patch of brush in between the road and the lake.  I have returned many times since the sighting and have not seen him, although I have seen many signs of his presence.  There are many holes that are consistent with the kinds of holes foxes dig when searching for prey underground (franticly dug holes, with claw marks clearly visible, many such holes in a close proximity).  One of the holes I found surrounded with half eaten eggs.  Also his tracks are clearly visible on a daily basis as well as his scat.  Because of this I believe he is a resident and not moving through the area.

If you were heading down the road towards Daly City and turned into the second rest area you would be near the spot.  I have researched extensively and I am certain that it was indeed a Red Fox and not a grey. I have seen no information about Red Foxes by the lake. So, I thought you might want to check it out and add it to the list you have of mammals of Lake Merced.
