Enterprise: Lake Merced
Goal:
To increase public awareness of the status, progress and impact of
SFPUC initiatives to restore Lake Merced
Target
Audiences:
- Lake Merced Task Force
- Affected communities and neighborhoods
- General public
- Elected officials – local and regional
- Environmental organizations and regulators
- Media outlets – local and regional
- SFPUC Commissioners and employees
- San Francisco city departments
Key Messages:
- The SFPUC is committed to environmental stewardship and long-term
protection of Lake Merced
- The SFPUC is working with other City agencies and stakeholders to
provide short andlong-term solutions to the complex problems at
Lake Merced
- The SFPUC is proactively working to restore Lake Merced over the
long term and to raiselake levels using some combination of:
- SFPUC drinking water supplies
- Recycled water from Daly city or the SFPUC
- Storm water from the Vista Grande Canal
- Groundwater from the Westside Basin
Communications
Strategies & Actions 2004-2005 Plan:
- Expand opportunities for public participation in Lake Merced’s
restoration efforts
- Coordinate and promote quarterly community meetings near Lake
Merced
- Coordinate and promote annual Lake Merced Clean-up event
- Assist with the promotion of Lake Merced Trout Fishing Day
- Expand the promotion of community meetings to more organizations,
neighborhood groups and universities
- Expand and update media list of neighborhood newspapers and media
sources for placement of community announcements of the meetings
- Continue working with Planning Division to develop and pitch
public interest stories about Lake Merced
Measures of Success:
- Coordinate three to four quarterly meetings annually about Lake
Merced
- Increased distribution of community meeting press releases and
meeting announcements
Enhance
public education about Lake Merced and its restoration
- Assist Planning Bureau in the development of quarterly
informational materials containing information about projects and lake
levels at Lake Merced
- Promote the success of the Conjunctive Use Study with the Daly
City, San Bruno, and the California Water Service
- Maximize usage of sfwater.org as an effective tool for
disseminating reports about Lake Merced
Measures of Success:
- Enhanced delivery process for Lake Merced reports by Spring 2004
